The Horizon series is poised to continue its pivotal role in shaping the future of PlayStation in 2024 and beyond. The anticipation builds with the imminent PC port of Horizon Forbidden West and the promise of new IP content, including a groundbreaking MMORPG developed by NCSoft.

A recent job listing from Guerrilla Games seems to corroborate the existence of this MMORPG, previously hinted at in reports from the preceding year. With Guerrilla Games affirming the franchise’s extended lifespan, such ambitious projects are crucial to ensuring a sustained engagement of players with novel and captivating experiences.

Speculations abound that this MMORPG might bear the moniker “Land of Salvation,” undergoing development under the codename “Project Skyline” by NCSoft. Intriguingly, the job listing employs a font strikingly reminiscent of the Horizon logo, leading keen-eyed observers on Twitter, like user Kurakasis, to assert the virtual inevitability of this online game.

Reports also indicate that Unreal Engine 5 will power this MMORPG, marking a departure from the acclaimed Decima engine renowned for its technical prowess in previous Horizon games. Moreover, the Horizon MMORPG seems to be targeting a broad audience, extending its reach to mobile and PC platforms. While the job listing is silent on PlayStation or console platforms, it remains inconceivable for this IP to forgo a console release, making a debut on PS5 highly probable.

NCSoft’s ongoing work on Aion 2, another MMORPG designed for PC and mobile, positions the Horizon MMORPG for a release sometime after Aion 2’s arrival in 2024 or 2025, suggesting a patient wait for eager fans. The project, in development for approximately three years, has seen significant growth, with a reported 140 developers focusing their talents on the endeavor by September 2023.

Notably, the Horizon franchise has consistently found success beyond the confines of PlayStation, with Horizon Zero Dawn standing out as the best-selling PlayStation PC Port. The prospect of an online game, exploring the rich world and lore of the Horizon IP, raises expectations for even greater success.

In light of recent trends in the gaming industry, such as the thriving online live-service titles of IPs like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, it’s conceivable that this MMORPG has the potential to evolve into a significant cornerstone for Sony, offering sustained entertainment and engagement for players in the years to come. The future appears promising as the Horizon series extends its reach into uncharted online territories.
