Netflix has made an exciting move by releasing the critically acclaimed Nimona, a film that has garnered Oscar nominations, on YouTube for free streaming. Based on the beloved graphic novel by ND Stevenson, this animated masterpiece follows the adventures of Nimona, a mischievous shapeshifter brought to life with the voice talent of Chloë Grace Moretz. Alongside her is the valiant knight Ballister Boldheart, voiced by the talented Riz Ahmed, as they embark on a quest to clear his name from the false accusation of regicide.
Receiving positive reception on Metacritic with a solid score of 73, Netflix’s decision to make Nimona accessible to a wider audience comes as part of its strategic Oscar campaign. Notably, ND Stevenson, the creative force behind the acclaimed She-Ra: Princess of Power animated reboot, spearheaded this project.
Originally conceived by Blue Sky Studios and helmed by Oscar winner Patrick Osborne, Nimona was initially slated for a 2020 release. However, the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company led to delays and eventual cancellation of the project. Thankfully, Annapurna Pictures stepped in the following year, breathing new life into the film with directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane at the helm.
In a year brimming with stellar animated contenders, Nimona faces stiff competition in the Best Animated Feature category. Competitors include Robot Dreams, Elemental, The Boy and the Heron, and the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Notably, the original Spider-Verse film clinched the coveted Best Animated Feature award five years ago, while Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and The Heron emerged victorious at the recent Golden Globes, positioning it as a strong frontrunner.
As anticipation builds, mark your calendars for the Academy Awards ceremony on March 10th, where the fate of Nimona and its fellow nominees will be decided.
