For years, Apple fans have been eagerly anticipating a new iPhone design that eliminates the infamous “notch” at the top of the screen. This dream seemed to be on the horizon when an Apple analyst predicted that all of the components necessary for Face ID could be relocated under the display by next year. However, a recent leak from industry insider Ross Young suggests that this breakthrough may not come until 2025 or later.

The Face ID system, which enables secure facial recognition, relies on a combination of sensors that work in tandem with a front-facing camera located beneath the notch. The idea of under-display Face ID has been in development for some time, but according to Young, “sensor issues” have caused a delay of at least a year.

While the specifics of these sensor issues are not clear, it’s likely that Apple is facing significant technical challenges in miniaturizing the necessary components and integrating them seamlessly into the iPhone’s design. In the meantime, Apple has been gradually reducing the size of the notch on its premium phones, with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max featuring a new feature called “Dynamic Island” that partially hides and repurposes the notch space as a control panel for media and apps.

It’s worth noting that other smartphone manufacturers have already released phones with under-display front cameras, including the ZTE Axon 20 5G, which debuted in 2020. However, these early attempts have been met with mixed reviews, with some critics noting that the image quality of selfies taken with under-display cameras is often underwhelming.

Despite these challenges, many Apple fans remain hopeful that the company will eventually find a way to eliminate the notch and deliver a sleeker, more seamless iPhone design. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what technological advances the coming years bring.
