The upcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5 is expected to be a big one, with many exciting announcements anticipated. One of the most highly anticipated reveals is the long-rumored AR/VR headset that Apple has been working on. But that’s not all: reports indicate that Apple is also preparing to unveil iOS 17, the next iteration of its mobile software for the iPhone.
According to a recent report from Bloomberg, iOS 17 may include a significant new feature: the ability for Apple device users to sideload apps. Sideloading would allow users to download apps outside of the App Store, something that has long been restricted by Apple. The move is reportedly a response to new European regulations that are set to take effect next year, which aim to level the playing field for third-party developers.
While sideloading could be a boon for users who want to install apps that are not available in the App Store, it could also pose security risks. Apple has historically been opposed to sideloading for this reason, arguing that it could compromise the security of iPhones. It remains to be seen how Apple will address these concerns if iOS 17 does indeed include sideloading capabilities.
In addition to iOS 17, WWDC is also expected to bring updates to iPadOS and MacOS, as well as an update to WatchOS 10. It’s unclear at this time whether sideloading will be extended to these operating systems as well.
As of the time of publication, Apple has not commented on the rumored sideloading feature in iOS 17 or any of the other potential announcements at WWDC. But with just a few weeks to go until the event, anticipation is high for what promises to be a major event for Apple and its users.
