Netflix Film Club has released a video that digs deep and explains the evolution of Artificial Intelligence in movies. It takes us through famous movies such as Metropolis, The Day The Earth Stood Still, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Westworld, Alien, War Games, Tron, Terminator, Blade Runner, Ex Machina, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Netflix movies such as Outside the Wire and Oxygen.

In the new sci-fi thriller Oxygen, from horror auteur Alexandre Aja, artificial intelligence takes center stage. The film opens on a woman who wakes up in a locked cryogenic chamber with her oxygen supplies reaching critical levels — and it only ramps up the tension from there. Worse, MILO, the onboard AI, may not be programmed for total honesty.

The relationship viewers form with MILO during the runtime of Oxygen is critical to the story, and it’s a concept that filmmakers have been tinkering with for longer than you might think. Over the years, AI in films has changed — sometimes drastically — with the times. Here’s an in-depth look at how AI has evolved in movies.
