First ‘Borderlands’ Trailer Sends Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart to “Dumpster Fire of a World”

by William Linden

The inaugural Borderlands trailer thrusts a constellation of A-list talents into the perilous expanse of Pandora, renowned as the most treacherous planet in the cosmos.

At the helm stands Cate Blanchett, commanding the screen as Lilith, the intrepid outlaw leading a ragtag band on a daring expedition to unearth a fabled treasure concealed within a vault nestled amidst what she aptly terms a “dumpster fire of a world.” Alongside her, Kevin Hart injects his trademark charisma into the role of Roland, while Jamie Lee Curtis embodies the enigmatic Tannis. Jack Black lends his voice to the eccentric robot Claptrap, adding his unique flair to the ensemble, which also features Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett, and Édgar Ramirez.

Echoing the electrifying rhythms reminiscent of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, the trailer pulsates with rock and roll energy, underscored by the iconic sounds of Electric Light Orchestra’s “Do Ya.”

Borderlands emerges as a highly anticipated cinematic venture, boasting a lineage deeply rooted in its revered video game origins. The project has undergone meticulous cultivation over time, with filmmaker Eli Roth even managing to birth an entirely separate movie (Thanksgiving) prior to wrapping up production on this ambitious feature. Stepping into the fray in early 2023 to helm reshoots, Tim Miller, celebrated for his work on Deadpool, navigated the production through its final stages when Roth’s commitments with Thanksgiving presented scheduling conflicts.

Behind the scenes, Gearbox and 2K stand as the creative forces propelling the video game franchise into the cinematic realm. Avi Arad and Ari Arad spearhead production under their esteemed Arad Productions banner, joined by Erik Feig of Picturestart. Mark your calendars for August 9th, when Lionsgate unveils this epic odyssey to audiences worldwide.
