Fallout 2 is often viewed by a lot of fans of the series as one of the finest Fallout games out there, alongside games like Fallout: New Vegas and the original game. It’s so prized by certain fans that a group going by the title Fallout 4: Project Arroyo has been remaking the game with Fallout 4’s engine, turning the title from a top-down adventure into the Fallout we know and love today.
That contains voicing every character, reworking top-down systems like spontaneous encounters, and creating custom sites, all while maintaining that classic Fallout 2 feel. It would be a challenging undertaking for a skilled triple-A studio, never mind a group of fan developers, but those after Project Arroyo are dedicated, and they’ve been making rather decent progress.
On July 4, the Twitter account behind Project Arroyo shared the news that players of the remake will be looking at for some time, giving us a sneak peek at Fallout 2’s revamped Pip-Boy made within the Fallout 4 engine. We don’t get to see that much unfortunately, with only a short section of screen and some controls on display, but the tweet also reveals that it will be a major part of the project’s next video update.
“Fallout 4 has a mod that’s a handheld Pip-Boy which is pretty much the Fallout 2 one – it looks exactly like it. I used that one so much in my modded playthroughs and I know it has a lot of bugs, so we can’t use that one.”
Fallout 2 Remake Devs Unveil Revamped Classic Pip-Boy
Those after the Project Arroyo know how critical the Pip-Boy is to the series, and a considerable amount of effort is being made to make sure it’s just right. In an interview with project lead Damion Daponte, he talks about how rather than use a current Fallout 4 mod for the Pip-Boy, the team has gone out of their way to make their recreation, explaining that it will be wrist-mounted like in earlier games, even though you can’t tell in the original Fallout 2.
