And just like that, another Emmy Awards season has come to a close. After last year’s delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy of Schitt’s Creek, took place last night at the Peacock Theater in LA. In a night with few major surprises, the two most nominated shows of the year—Shōgun and The Bear—dominated the awards, with Shōgun taking home 18 trophies and The Bear securing 11.
Shōgun made history with the most awards for a single season in Emmy history. The show also won Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. The standout performances of Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai earned them historic wins for Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Drama, respectively.
On the other hand, The Bear continued to impress, with Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach securing Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor awards. Although it was initially categorized as a comedy, its victory in the comedy categories was a notable shake-up, particularly with Hacks taking home the Outstanding Comedy award. Hacks also scored wins for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series (Jean Smart) and Comedy Writing.
Netflix’s Baby Reindeer was another highlight, winning in the Limited/Anthology Series categories for Actor, Supporting Actress, Writing, and overall Series, with Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning receiving particular praise.
Other notable winners included Jodie Foster, who was awarded Outstanding Actress in a Limited/Anthology Series for True Detective: Night Country, and Elizabeth Debicki, who won Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown. Billy Crudup and Lamorne Morris also took home awards for Supporting Actor in a Drama and Limited/Anthology Series, respectively.
Apple TV’s Slow Horses finally earned recognition, with Will Smith winning Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the episode “Negotiations With Tigers.” Fans of Gary Oldman’s performance as Jackson Lamb will hope for more accolades in future seasons.
